Have you been noticing that some of your employees are falling behind in their work? Have they been spending most of their time in silence?

People feeling sad is a normal reaction to loss or life's struggles, including feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless. If it lasts for many days or weeks, it can lead to Clinical depression, a treatable medical condition. Clinical depression is the more-severe form of depression, also known as major depression or major depressive disorder.

When an employee is depressed, it can affect not only that employee’s productivity and happiness, but the entire mood of his or her co-workers and their productivity too. Aside from affecting how a person feels and behaves, depression also influences thinking.

New South African research involving over 1000 employed/previously employed workers or managers in the country now proves depression is not just a bad mood. Although respondents showed a poor awareness of cognitive symptoms, 74% of them reported experiencing one or more of the following the last time they were depressed: trouble concentrating, forgetfulness, indecisiveness.

According to nearly half of the participants with depression, the cognitive symptom that most affected their ability to perform work tasks as they normally would was difficulty in concentrating.
Common Cognitive Symptoms:-
  • Poor concentration
  • Easily distracted
  • Poor memory/forgetfulness
  • Indecisiveness
  • Slower thinking speed
  • Problem solving difficulties
  • Struggling to find the right words to express your thoughts
  • Negative or distorted thinking patterns

The causes of a workplace depression can be poor management practices, limited participation given in decision making, inflexible work hours, low level of support or even pressure to meet unrealistic targets.
There are several strategies which can be used by the company to deal with stress or depression
  • Educate staff about depression- Bring in a Consultant who has an expertise in this field.
  • Set up Resources for those suffering with depression-  Counselling, helpline numbers.
  • Ecotherapy technique- Decorate the space with plants.
  • Explore creative ways to support an employee’s recovery, like flexible/adjusted working hours or working from home for a while.
  • Healthy Food- Availability of healthy food takes care of protein intake.

Happy Workplace
:)
Creating an environment that makes everyone feel comfortable equates to happy employees. Creating a positive workplace atmosphere is crucial in terms of both workplace happiness and your team members’ productivity, and that all starts with you setting a cheerful tone.

5 Tricks and Tips for establishing a Happy Workplace :)

1) Appreciate, Praise & Recognition
At SnackNation, there’s a  “Crush It Call” every Friday. It goes like this: the entire team gathers around in a circle and they go around the room calling out someone whose work they want to recognize (i.e. “someone who “crushed it” that week).

2) Make Work Fulfilling
Zappos is a great example. They sell shoes and clothing online, but their mission is to “deliver happiness.” All new hires at Zappos spend two weeks fielding customer service calls, no matter which department they’re going to be working for. This ensures that everyone sees the value of their work – “delivering happiness” to their customers.

3) Offer meaningful perks
Offer Perks that improve quality of life and demonstrate that your company cares about employees, things like health and wellness programs, child care, and unlimited vacation. It’s the reason you see top companies like Google, Facebook, and Apple offer extensive perks to keep their teams happy.

4) Make the Office comfortable
Working in a clean, attractive office can have tremendous effects on co-workers and manager relationships. Even if the sun can't shine into your workplace, make an effort to provide a relaxing atmosphere with comfy furniture, working equipment and a few 'extra-mile' amenities. give your employees the flexibility to choose to work where they're comfortable, including comfy chairs or a choice of whether to sit or stand at their desks

5) Improve Communication
Offering employees specific feedback on how their work is feeding into the broader business objectives is one way to do it. Don't forget to show gratitude for hard work. It ignites enthusiasm, increases innovation, builds trust and drives bottom-line results.

After all, Employees are your treasure. Cherish them!
Happier your employees are, the more successful your company will be! :)
